According to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), all individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease, as well as their caregivers, should receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Not only are elderly individuals at high risk for being affected by the Coronavirus, but those with Alzheimer’s disease are at a greater risk of developing serious complications from the virus.
Family caregivers should also protect themselves against the virus by getting the vaccine. If their own health is compromised, they will not have the ability to properly care for their loved ones. COVID-19 does not pick and choose who it affects. Everyone is vulnerable. But the vaccine will help lower the chances of individuals becoming infected with the virus, as well decreasing the risks of having serious symptoms should they become infected.
Getting vaccinated is one of the most critical steps anyone can take, especially for the elderly and those living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, to protect themselves as well as their loved ones.
